The home gym that fits the room you actually have

A home gym is decided by ceiling height, floor loading and how much space is left when it is all out. Plan it as a board with the footprint on every piece, and find the problem before the delivery.

The short version

Home gym equipment is chosen on space, not price. Measure ceiling height before considering a rack, because an overhead press needs more room than the rack does. Keep footprint, assembled weight and ceiling clearance on each item, and buy in the order that a beginner actually uses.

The garage, eventually

Two point three metres of ceiling and a budget. Everything has to fit both.

Who it's for

Anyone converting a garage, a spare room or a corner, and working out what will physically fit before spending anything.

What people use today

The home gym subreddits run on shared spreadsheets and are genuinely good. A spreadsheet is a bad place to hold what a squat rack looks like in a garage with a 2.3 metre ceiling, which is the part people get wrong.

What a board tracks here

Fields you name yourself, on the item they belong to. These are the ones that decide a purchase and have nowhere else to live.

Footprint
The number that decides everything, and it is not the number in the product title.
Ceiling needed
A rack fits under 2.3 metres. Pressing overhead inside it does not.
Max load
Rated capacity is a real limit, and so is what the floor above a basement will take.
Assembled weight
Whether you can move it alone decides whether the room stays usable for anything else.
