The dorm room list, for a room you have not seen yet
You are buying for a room whose measurements you will not have until you arrive. Plan it as a board split into what is safe to buy now and what waits until you are standing in it, against a real number.
The short version
The mistake with dorm shopping is buying everything in August for a room you see in September. Split the list: bedding, laundry and desk things are safe to buy blind, and anything with a measurement is not. Check the accommodation rules first, because most ban the appliances people buy first.

Who it's for
Students and parents kitting out a first hall or shared room, usually across one weekend and one budget.
What people use today
Retailer back-to-school lists, which are seasonal, generic, and sized to a trolley rather than to a room. Nothing holds what your specific hall allows or what your roommate is already bringing.
What a board tracks here
Fields you name yourself, on the item they belong to. These are the ones that decide a purchase and have nowhere else to live.
- Allowed?
- Halls ban kettles, candles and sometimes fridges. It is in a PDF nobody reads twice.
- Buy blind
- Whether it can be bought before seeing the room, or needs a tape measure first.
- Roommate has
- Two microwaves in one room is the classic, and it is a message away from being avoided.
- Fits a car
- Everything has to arrive in one trip, and a mattress topper is bigger than it looks.
